How to Plan a Susainable Wardrobe that Lasts a Lifetime

Meet Christine Dalman.  Christine is one of elfa’s  Top Storage experts.  Christine is going to share with you her best tips for thinking long term & sustainable, in your Wardrobe.

Is your wardrobe full of clothes you never use? This is the case for many of us. In Sweden, as many as one
third of the population only uses half of their clothes and shoes regularly. But as the world is changing so is
our shopping behaviour. People tend to buy less, swop, sell and recycle to a larger extent than ever before. In
Sweden that is true for more than half of the population, according to our Storage report.

For anyone who wants to contribute to a more sustainable living, the closet can be a good a place to start. By using garments many times, selling them or buying second hand, you prolong their life cycle. And by storing them accessible and with good overview, the risk of you saying “I have nothing to wear” decreases dramatically.
And hopefully the excess impulse buying as well.

But the most important advice I can give is to thing long-term and choose quality instead of quantity, both when it comes to clothes and how you store them. Go for a timeless durable closet with flexibility, so that when your needs changes, you can easily rearrange and add on to your solution. Airy shelves and special functions for you clothes and shoes can make them last longer, by keeping them separated and fresh. I have gathered some more tips below, which I hope will inspire you to more sustainable habits in your closet.

Pull Out Ventilated Baskets

Christine advises “Knitted sweaters can loose their shape on a hanger, so use mesh drawers with dividers to keep them fresh and neatly organized”.

Sharon’s comments “Living in the Tropics I find that I don’t have to many sweaters.  However the pullout mesh drawers with dividers are great for my leisure wear, sports clothes, tops and smalls”.
